In early January, I visited the Caravaggio exhibition at the National Gallery here in London. As one of my favourite painters, I am always fascinated by his rendering of fabric folds and use of chiaroscuro.
Whilst I have done drapery studies in the past, the idea of basing a piece of coloured fabric on a particular action or mood, really appealed to me. A hybrid of abstraction and realism.
When I think of ''sleep'', I think of warm thick duvets, clean cotton bedsheets, and cool to the touch pillows. Upon simplifying the theme even more, I finalised on simply using a white bedsheet as the subject, floating in space.
