This painting is inspired by the mesoamerican mythology of the Nahual; a creature in transformation. It forms part of a series in which Stephenson is exploring the interrelationships between humans and nature, especially as portrayed in other cultures such as that of Mexico, where he has been working for the past several years.

With the intention of creating a mysterious world for the viewer to engage with and enter, this elegant creature is depicted lurking just behind the foreground, partly concealed and enticing.
