An original watercolour painting of an imaginary highlands landscape, lit with bright moon and starlight. The colours are stunning and rich, and the paint has been allowed to merge to create beautiful grainy effects in the hills and sky.
My starting point for this picture was the colours. I wanted to explore the grainy properties of cobalt blue and raw and burnt sienna, to create texture. Most of the paint in the picture was applied in one very wet wash with lots of paint, allowing the paint to settle into subtle effects which I then built from, adding details to define the landscape. Because it's mainly a single wash the colours are very clear and intense rather than muddy.
Artists' watercolour paints and gum arabic on 140lb / 300g/m2 watercolour paper.
