  • Printing an etching

This video shows me inking up and printing my two plate etching "A Time of Plenty". The process takes about 45mins but I've edited it down to 4 mins for you to have a quick insight into how it happens.

    Signing a monotype

I'm signing a monotype called "A Perfect Moment". The photographer got me to laugh just at that moment!

This is layer 4 of a 5 layer process to produce a monotype called Poppy Field.

    Holding back the blankets

I'm carefully lifting the blankets on my press so that the paper underneath doesn't slip or blot.

    Printing a monotype

I'm winding the plastic plate through my press with paper on top. The blankets cushion the paper and enable a good impression to be made.

    Low tech printing!

    Low tech printing!

Here you can see some of the inky detail for one of my monotypes. The ink on the plastic surface and textured papers will end up on the finished print.

    Printing rollers

These small printing rollers are ideal for applying coloured ink to my plastic sheet. They do look rather lush like this!

    Starting work on a monotype

    Starting work on a monotype

In my studio, I've laid out all the materials I need for printing a monotype (a painting printed from a plastic sheet). I'm applying ink with a dabber. The mixed inks are in muffin tins and colour samples are on the table for reference.

Printing an etching - the finished result

Printing an etching - the finished result

I don't normally put my finished prints anywhere near my messy printing inks! But just to show you the finished result next to the plates and materials I used. This is Shepherd's cottage available in my Artfinder shop both framed and mounted.

Printing an etching - tools of the trade

Copper plates, inks and materials for inking up an etching. The muffin tin is handy for keeping mixed inks in.

Peeling back the paper for new meadow idea

I'm peeling back the paper on layer two of a new meadow idea. These are softer colours and a new theme for me that I'm looking forward to developing. This print only needs trees, doors and windows to be complete.

    My messy palettes

    My messy palettes

I keep my monotype printing inks in muffin tins! I've used these ones continuously for about 5 years so they are in a fine state of arty messiness! It saves me an enormous amount of time if I don't have to mix the colours from scratch each time I start work.
