About Ray Sandom

  • Biography
I mainly paint seascapes and landscapes because, for me, there is nothing more inspiring than a sunny day by the coast or walking through the countryside.

My earliest inspiration to paint seascapes was due to my childhood holidays in St. Ives, Cornwall. From my very first holiday there, aged about ten, I was immediately drawn to the numerous art galleries, some with resident artists, and I would spend as much time as possible watching them work.

I have returned many times since. The shimmering sapphire sea, the golden sand beaches, the stone cottages and of course the colourful art galleries. If I am not wandering along the beautiful coastline or around the picturesque winding streets, you will almost always find me in one of the galleries admiring the artworks.

Now in my fifties and I have never become bored with St. Ives. Each time, as I travel along the approach road and catch glimpses of the town, I am always stunned by its beauty. Whether the sun is shining or the tide is in or out, it is a sight that I adore and instantly I am thinking about my next painting.
