About Mary Osinibi

  • Biography

My artwork is a form of storytelling; collecting and exploring social, political and cultural issues. Often referencing Western history, surrealism and minimalism; while my technique explores the varying relationships between fine art and technology.

Having engaged subjects as diverse as the effects of past and present wars, human migrations and colonization, my work visualises this in a form of abstract portraits of real people from the past or present who’s stories we can learn from hence we keep making the same mistake; as well as reproducing and restoring ancient past visuals.

While I use a variety of materials and processes in each project my methodology is consistent. A harmony of conflicting states is one of many interpretations of my techniques; my signature style of paintings built up from multiple layers of applied acrylic paints with a wide variety of hues and shades often merged with digital art; the combination of media that evokes the notion that not everything is as it appears; it underlines a sense of tension between polar opposites such as past to present, good and evil, right and wrong, subjective and objective.

Event: 'Human Suffering at Times of Crisis' curated by Barry Martin

    Dates: 1 Oct 2014 - 31 Oct 2014

Venue: Debut Contemporary Gallery, Notting Hill, London, W2 5RT

Artist Mary Osinibi’s latest work (Children of War Series, 2014) is in response to a special exhibition being curated by established British artist Barry Martin on the theme 'Human Suffering at Times of Crisis'.

Mary Osinibi focused on the children affected by wars she aims to remind us of past wars to serve as a warning for todays current wars; the view that we in the 21st century have yet to learn from the suffering and wars of the past. Quote from the book of Ecclesiastes 1:4-11 sums it up “There is nothing new under the sun”.

By using real photographs of actual real past wars of children who where destroyed by wars Mary Osinibi aims to remind and awaken the conscience of her viewers for change, that we may learn from the horrors of the past.

By merging a doll’s face to a child’s face is symbolic, for it’s a reflection of the madness they are witnessing, the cold shell of a human heart with no conscience, no feeling; simply a life less doll heart of their oppressors.

The doll’s face also represent the taken away of innocent from a child, which resulted from the witnessing and experience of suffering and violence, the bright use of colours such as blue, red, green and yellow, emphasis the scars, emotions and change the child experiences from being warm and affectionate to being cold and affectionless.

The 'Human Suffering at Times of Crisis' exhibition takes place on Wednesday, 1st October 2014 at Debut Contemporary gallery in Notting Hill, London. Mary Osinibi will be exhibiting alongside established artists such as Barry Martin whose work has being collected by The Tate Gallery, Museum of Modern Art and National Portrait Gallery; Guy Portelli a sculptural who was featured on BBC TVs Dragon's Den and also artist Sassan Bakhtiar who is part of the Sotheby's family of artist.
