About Marie T Harris

  • Biography
For the past twenty years I have been a professional painter experimenting in many mediums, but specializing in oil painting.   I show and sell my work at ADM Gallery and at local shows, at art exhibits and online.  I belong to the Delaware Valley Art League and the Artists Circle, two professional art organizations where I also exhibit my paintings.  In the past I have won several prizes for my paintings.  I enjoy painting as a means of expressing my emotions and ideas through various styles and techniques.  While I enjoy painting representational, impressionistic and realistic paintings, I also need to express myself in painting abstract images too.  So you will find these styles in my collection.  My paintings have been purchased by banks and by customers for their private collections.
In my paintings, I try to communicate the feeling of beauty in nature, flowers and everyday objects using bright colors to express how I feel about them.  I often use a palette knife technique and lots of paint to experiment with color and shapes.  I admire Van Gogh and the Impressionists including Cezanne, and many others of that era.  However, I love the freedom of Matisse's paintings and the color and images of abstract painters, especially Kandinsky, Rothko and Picasso to name a few.  There are many more masterful artists of the past and present that I admire and look to for inspiration.  I believe that trying and experimenting with new colors, styles and mediums fulfills my creative spirit the most.  Besides oils, I experiment with acrylics, watercolors, pastels, colored pencils, charcoal, alcohol inks and sketching pencils.
Prior to my painting career, I was employed as an English teacher and Reading and Writing Specialist.  My education included a liberal arts B.S. degree, a M.Ed. in Education and Art.  I taught all ages from Pre-school through college during that period.  I am married, have four sons and seven grandchildren which also keeps me busy.  I also perform on piano, keyboard and guitar with local musicians.  While I mostly paint what pleases and inspires me, I occasionally do paint on commissions for customers who desire a specific theme or scene.
