Trained under Sir Lawrence Gowing in the 'Euston Road' style of direct observational painting, following Cézanne, and then under pupils of Renato Guttuso and Oscar Kokoschka at Florence Academy, my work often has a conceptual basis - an idea, a mathematical ratio, an historical theme, an experimental mode of depiction, a time-based technique, and then a long constructive process of analysing colour and drawing, piece by piece, until a harmony is reached. Colour is of especial interest to me - it is the defining aspect of painting and I see everything as an arrangement of pure colours, some more or less saturated/bright than others, rather than believing in the existence of 'shadows'. Drawing is the structure which holds the colours in place, and which operates according to a different logic. Every work is a new challenge, and the end result is never predicted. The work can go through many changes before it arrives at its final form, and consequently some of the paintings take many years to produce.
In the screenprints, I work differently. The image is clear from the outset, and 'reverse engineered' into areas of pure colour, (usually not more than five) superimposed according to a logical sequence, with the 'drawing' superimposed last to unite and harmonise the image. Some of the screenprints have featured in musical collaboration with Irish composer/musician Bernard O'Neill on YouTube.
In watercolour, I tend to look for broad patterns of light and internal rhythms in the subject.
Throughout, I always draw, to understand things, to see how another artist works, and to prepare for a painting.

Since 1989 I have worked collaboratively with Seetha A as "Moorland Productions" a creative collaboration which has led to many international events and exhibitions including the Venice Biennale, (1995 and 2003) and shows in Tibilisi, Georgia, Prague, Vancouver, Taiwan, Berlin etc. We have our own Press, The Moorland Press, website - see link in artist's info, and project spaces in London and France.

Works are in many private collections and commissions/murals include British Rail and The INTERPOL HQ , Den Haag.
