About Katerina Apale

  • Biography

I obtained my artistic training at the Art Academy of Latvia where I participated in a number of large exhibitions and important international art events. During the course of my degree, I travelled to the Berlin University of the Arts on an exchange program. I completed my degree in 2008, acquiring a Masters of Fine Arts.

My move to Australia in 2014 marked a new beginning in my career as an artist. The extraordinary beauty of the unique Australian native flora and fauna was a new and overwhelming sensory experience.

    Event: Katerina Apale: Present Memories

    Dates: 17 Dec 2022 - 26 Feb 2023

Venue: Gosford Regional Gallery, East Gosford, NSW Australia

Relocating to Australia in 2014 from Europe, Latvia born Katerina Apale shares her awe of her unique Australian coastal surrounds through vibrant paintings. Her artwork intwines lived experience, bringing memory and the present into a two-dimensional fold. Carrying with her the importance of being in the ‘here and now’, while still recognising there is always a part of ourselves which is our unescapable personal histories.
Apale is a second-generation painter and has spent time living and working as an artist in Berlin before relocating to the Central Coast NSW, where she works both en plein air and in her studio, with still life floral arrangements. Her paintings become versed in both saturated colour and muted tones, ink and oil on canvas, reflecting an appreciation of the surrounding natural and social environments for which she now calls home.
