    WHERE IS THE THIRD?

This is one of my allegorical paintings, which take up to nine months to complete. Everything in the painting, from the gestures, to the objects, to the colours, has a meaning, and in this way the picture can be read from left to right. Usually these paintings are commissioned and a full explanation is given to the client in a leaflet. Often they contact me afterwards to tell me that they have a new theory about the painting, one they have discovered themselves! My work has been exhibited in one man London shows and is collected worldwide. The large allegorical paintings are large, statement pieces, but the small pastel sketches, portraits and nudes are affordable and smaller. If you would like to talk about a commission, please get in touch. I can create something beautiful to suit your taste and your home.

Still Life with fruit and lizard

Still Life with fruit and lizard

This was a commissioned painting in which the client wanted fruit, flowers, insects, snakes and even an iguana included! It was hung in a fine heavy frame in a drawing room, but the painting would have worked as well in a less ornate frame in a contemporary setting. Sometimes traditional paintings - which always work well in traditional homes - come to life in modern houses. Sept. 19, 2015

    THE NIGHT GAME

    THE NIGHT GAME

This is one of a series of allegorical paintings I did for an London exhibition. In each painting gesture, expression, objects and colour all tell the story, so that the painting can be 'read' from left to right. For example, pearls symbolise vanity and the core of the ego; fur gives a hint as to the wearer's nature - ie. a woman wearing fox fur would be considered mendacious. All these paintings are life size and take up to eight/nine to complete. They are built up from an egg tempera base with layers of oil glazes, scumble and in places, impasto. So far my allegorical works have been collected in London, France and Japan.

    MIDNIGHT'S SMILING

    MIDNIGHT'S SMILING

Sometimes it's useful to see paintings actually hanging in a home; it gives a sense of size and how the colours would work amongst your own belongings and furniture. So even though this painting is 40 x 50 inches in size its positioning over a mantelpiece works perfectly.

    MIDNIGHT'S SMILING

    MIDNIGHT'S SMILING

This is one of a trio of my allegorical paintings which I exhibited in London. Two were sold, one going to a collector in New York. The paintings demonstrate the old techniques: egg tempera under layers of oil glazes and a high finish. As with all my allegorical works, the painting tells a story in gesture, positioning of the figures, objects, and colour. But although I was tempted to sell it, I kept MIDNIGHT'S SMILING at home. An artist always has a favourite!

Goya - THE MEMORY OF BONES

This was a video for my book on Goya - THE MEMORY OF BONES - published by Quercus Books. I describe my theory about the cause of Goya's death and around me - in my studio - are various paintings of his that I copied. Many of these appear in the video, some of which are the notorious BLACK PAINTINGS. Goya's life, illness and his times are fascinating, the BLACK PAINTINGS holding their secret meaning for centuries. Or maybe not so secret......

    A Little about William Hogarth

This is a video about William Hogarth and the book I wrote about him - LEGACY OF BLOOD. I copied many of his works and his Self Portrait, to give myself an insight into this gifted man.
