About Gadge Roberts

  • Biography
My work can be taken at face value, but I think with all good art, the viewer should have the option to go deeper and explore the different layers if they choose to.
I like to pick models who remind me of people in my life. I am interested in portraying genuine human emotion, inspiring memories through inanimate objects and letting the face tell the story.
I left behind my job working in textiles for T.V., film and stage to move to The Hague, The Netherlands. I rented a studio and took painting lessons from Dutch portrait artist Ed Van De Kooy.
While living in The Hague I would go to the Mauritshuis (which houses 'The girl with the pearl earring') and study the paint up close, trying to figure out what colours they had used and trying to isolate every brush stroke.
My style has been described as 'A Pop art format meets classical and formal techniques' or 'Magic realism'.
