Known especially for his iconic liquid lights / urban impressionistic neon lit cityscapes, DANK has been developing his geisha series for some time now and has begun blending the twi styles.

"My passion for Japanese imagery has been there since childhood. I was always interested in Manga, comics and any and all sci-fi films such as Bladerunner, and I used to absorb as much content as i could as a child. I was always drawn to the culture of Japan, from a historical view point, watching TV series such as the Water Margin, various black and white samurai films and other Japanese culture films. This interest has developed into the geisha portraits and future Tokyo murals that I love to paint all over the world.

Venue: The London West Bank Gallery, Notting Hill, London

Constantly challenging himself with both subject-matter and technique, and with a hatred to sticking to one thing for too long, Dan K’s work is bold, exciting, fresh and not easy to categorize. What excites us about Dan’s work is precisely the unpredictability and blend of graffiti and fine art styles which creates art that really works on canvas, inside the gallery (as opposed to some artists who are great on the street on large scale murals but who can’t somehow seem to adapt their work to the gallery space). We have worked with Dan and shown his work in the past, always with success including at our Houses of Parliament Charity Auction in December 2013 where Dan’s acrylic and spraypaint on canvas entitled “Rush Hour” (pictured somewhere below on this Facebook event page) fetched a very high price.

Over the last few years Dan’s work has seen a huge leap in popularity and he has travelled round the world painting large murals and participation is gallery shows globally.

Recent highlights of Dan K’s career include:

Painting 2 large murals in a prestigious Tokyo nightclub called Axxcis, having a few years back taken place in a group show in the Japanese capital. He was also commissioned to paint one of his large scale Geishas in the Pink Cow Restaurant in Roppongi. This experience filled Dan with endless rainy Tokyo scenes which he took back with him to London and we can often see in his paintings.

Dan was part of a team of “guerrilla projectors” who turned iconic British landmarks such as the white cliffs of Dover and the Tate Modern’s chimney into large scale outdoor public art galleries. Dan remembers seeing his tag on the iconic Tate Modern chimney as an amazing moment in his career.

The Saatchi Gallery invited Dan to an event sponsored by Liquitex spraypaint to come and demonstrate his skills and technique to a group of artists. Dan was grateful for the opportunity of showing his smaller scale, more detailed fine art techniques in such an incredible art gallery.

About this new solo art exhibition at London Westbank, Dan explains:

“The show oblivion is a personal exploration of recent times in my life which have been extremely traumatic and catastrophic. The show title “Oblivion” reflects the apocalyptic nature of the ideas behind the works; thinking the world was ending, being trapped in a personal hell, with pain and torment, standing on the edge of the abyss....Explosive, gestural swathes of fire and colour erupt from the canvases, like hellish volcanoes, with lava, aggressive and energetic, they scratch at the canvas surface like open wounds, glowing with heat and intensity.....The large scale of the paintings adds to the drama and all-encompassing feel I wanted to achieve. Standing in front of them you see nothing in your peripheral vision, just the hellish scene in front of you. You are for a moment, within that maelstrom, as I was. The large scale also allows to become far more involved in the painting physically. There are huge gestural strokes, for which I used the whole body literally to blast the paint onto the surface. It's a truly intense expression of underlying emotions and pain. Exorcising demons. “

Event: 'Neon Knights' - joint solo show

    Dates: 20 Jun 2014 - 6 Jul 2014

    Venue: Upfest Gallery, Bristol

Neon Knights, showing at the UPFEST Gallery on North Street for the next three weeks, features works by renowned street artists Dale Grimshaw and Dan Kitchener. Although London based, both artists have strong ties to Bristol: they were both present at the first UPFEST back in 2008 and have been back many times since, drawn by the irresistible momentum of the city's street art scene.

The duo's joint exhibition explores, intriguingly, "the realm between times".

"Both Dale and Dan painted at UPFEST's first-ever event at the Tobacco Factory, since when their popularity has grown in parallel with the festival's," explains gallery and festival director and founder Stephen Hayles.

Event: 'Dan Kitchener - solo show'

    Dates: 25 Jun 2013 - 7 Jul 2013

    Venue: Graffik Gallery, London

Dan Kitchener aka ‘DANK’ is an artist / street artist from the UK. Working in and around London and Essex, he has continues to demonstrate a wide range of diverse skills and talents. Never sticking to one format, subject or technique for too long, he thrives on new challenges in his ever-evolving and expanding art and creativity.

Working across all mediums, scale plays an important part in his work - he has a fondness for epic street pieces, with his monstrous creations seen on walls ranging from 20ft to over 100 ft. Light and the effects of light is also another huge aspect of his work, using this technique to give life to a varied range of compositions.

Having proudly worked with Sir Paul McCartney, Kylie, Calvin Harris, Lenny Kravitz, The Prodigy and a host of other artists and stars, Dan’s work spans across all media and is followed and collected all over the world, from America, Australia, Japan and Europe.
