About Brook Tate

  • Biography

Brook Tate is a British artist from the south east of England and is based in Bristol. Having taught himself to paint since 2011, Brook has developed his style by studying traditional techniques and taking inspiration from the lives of his models.

Using predominantly oil paint, Brook endeavours to create striking portraiture which both captures the personality of the model while singing with bold and energetic colour schemes. Brook uses gold and silver leaf in his work, both on canvas and wooden panel, in order to highlight specific details and give each piece extra compositional strength.

Recently, Brook has begun to explore themes of homosexuality, sensuality and internalised homophobia in his art. By creating more expressive work - minimalist line drawings, expressive pastels and bolder oil paints, he is processing complex and intimate emotions in a more vulnerable approach.
