The Readymade and #Pop Art 4

The Readymade and #Pop Art 4

Ever since Marcel DuChamp produced his first recognised ReadyMade, "Bicycle Wheel", in 1913, artists have used existing objects in their conceptual work to challange and question the notion of "What is art?". #Pop Art 4 takes the graphic elements of T-Shirt / poster design (borrowing heavily from Katherine Hamnett / Paul Morley's "Frankie Say" design) and places Tracey Emin's bed into a "What If?" situation. Please feel free to laugh.

#Pop Art 3... the medium is the message?

#Pop Art 3... the medium is the message?

I love that artists are creative and use different methods and materials to produce their work. Over the past couple of years a number of artists have taken to producing work on newspapers and book pages. Is this linked to austerity, a cheap substrate? Are we concerned with the environment and recycling? Or is it another means of experimentation and expression. Whatever the reason I couldn't help but recall my youth and my grandfather's toilet in which he made his own toilet paper from yesterday's newspaper. In the 1970s my own parents did the same when money was short and we'd run out, hence #Pop Art 3 "In the 1970s...".

    About the #Pop Art series.

    About the #Pop Art series.

There has always been a debate with certain types of art that, "Anyone could have done that" or "My five year old could have done that". Marcel Duchamp's "Fountain", Carl Andre's "Equivalent" series, Andy Warhol's screenprints (which often anyone did create, albeit under Warhol's watchful eye), Tracey Emin's bed, Bridgette Riley's stripes and Jeff Koon's inflatables have all, at some time, evoked these types of responses. I have a soft spot for these works and, like most artists, my response to "Anyone could have done that" is usually, "But they didn't". The #Pop Art series is intended to use humour to further fuel this debate. The first piece, "A Fucking Monkey Could Have Done That", playfully teams Warhol's famous Velvet Underground banana with Banksy style graffiti, while "Guilty" puts the culprit behind Riley-esque prison bars. I hope you enjoy the series.
