About Stefania Boiano

  • Biography
My work is inspired by my travels in nature and is about the experience of a landscape or a seascape. Rather than presenting a topographical reality, I abstract the landscape through my memory and sensory impressions. My paintings are the synthesis of colours, light and forms seen and experienced in a place in a certain weather or season.
I don’t work from photographs or preparatory sketches but it’s my selective memory to suggest elements, colours and structure of that specific slice of earth to depict - a slice that I build up in layers with an expressive style in a visceral manner. The compositions unfold over a period of time through the process of adding and removing marks, by balancing intuitive gestures with considered refinement. I work in a number of mediums including acrylic, ink, watercolour, collage and oil pastel and use any experimental tool that can leave unpredictable marks on the surface, such as found and discarded objects, old linens, recycled materials, bird feathers, twigs and stones.

    Event: Contrasts & Conflicts

    Dates: 8 Sep 2011 - 18 Sep 2011

    Venue: East Gallery, London

CONTRASTS & CONFLICTS curated by Veronica Regini is an exhibition held at East Gallery in Brick Lane, East London, from September 8 to 18. The show brings together the work of four artists for whom contrast and conflict represent a key element within their artistic research. Each artist investigates the contrast from a different perspective: the formal and material aspect (Rae Old-Hall), the verbal and non-verbal communication in love relationships (Gali Szenkier), the inner struggle to discover ourselves and accept our essence (Stefania Boiano), and the tantalizing relationship between artist and spectator (Massimiliano Mirabella). During the opening evening there will be a series of live performances.
