About Thomas Gowen

  • Biography
The subjects I paint (usually in oil) are varied although my main area of interest is landscape and seascape from my studio in the Cotswolds or on location. When painting I enjoy the feeling of applying textured paint in order to convey the beauty I see in nature using thick colour. A technique known as 'Impasto'

Impasto is a word to describe work created using thick textured brush/palette knife strokes, often used when paint is laid on an area of the surface very thickly, usually thick enough that the brush or painting-knife strokes are visible. Paint can also be mixed right on the canvas. When dry, impasto provides texture, the paint appears to be coming out of the canvas.

When the work goes well I like to think it will go to a good home - that someone will enjoy that reaction whenever they look at it.

    Event: 'Impasto'

    Dates: 25 Nov 2015 - 1 Dec 2015

    Venue: Montpellier Garden's Gallery, Cheltenham

My second solo exhibition featured a wide range of original oil paintings using thick colour in an attempt to capture the 3d feel and emotional effect of landscape using broad palette knife strokes. This exhibition consisted of 60 paintings inspired by various travels across the UK and abroad ranging from landscape to seascape and one or two streetscenes created over a period of around 3 to 4 years. Although I didn't have long to prepare, it felt incredibly rewarding to be able to display my work in a large exhibition space as it gave me the opportunity to analyse my work more closely as a whole in order to plan future subjects and to show to more people.

    Event: A Sense of Place

    Dates: 11 Jun 2012 - 25 Jun 2012

Venue: New Brewery Arts Centre, Cirencester

My first solo exhibition consisted of a variety of original oil paintings using palette knife in an attempt to capture the 3d feel and emotional effect of colour and light. This exhibition consisted of around 20-30 paintings (mostly landscape) created over a period of 2 years since graduating with a degree in Fine Art at the University of Gloucestershire and was inspired by various travels across the UK and abroad.

    Event: ‘Sense of place’

    Dates: 20 Aug 2011 - 27 Aug 2011

Venue: Gloucestershire Arts & Crafts, Gloucester

An exhibition of original oil paintings done with a palette knife.
