    My Paintbox

My most treasured possession, a Winsor & Newton half pan watercolour box. I've had it for nearly 30 years and I'd be lost without it.

I tend to work sitting down, I start a session sketching short poses with 8B Derwent water soluble graphites in a standard A3 Seawhite sketchpad. For the longer poses I change to my Khadi book. I favour the largest available case bound smooth pad which is 350x280mm. Khadi is a hand made Indian 100% cotton rag paper available in rough or smooth. The sheets are acid free and of a good weight to take a soaking. I particularly like the variety within one sketch pad with some sheets being waxy, others more absorbent. I draw with 3B Caran D'Ache Technalo pencils and I have to have a sharp point to begin with, shaped with a scalpel blade. With the line drawing and shading complete I begin mixing up a range of colours from a well-used box of half pan Winsor & Newton watercolours applied with a size 5 Kolinsky sable brush.
