About Shadric Toop

  • Biography

I'm a Brighton-based artist and graphic designer. I've been running my own studio for about 20 years. I take on a whole variety of commissions which split roughly 50-50 between graphic design and illustration/image-making.

My image-making work usually starts with a hand-made process such as drawing, painting or collage, sometimes incorporating my own photography.

Then, there is a digital phase, which involves editing or combining elements. This last part of the process means that to create a physical art piece to hang on a wall, it ultimately has to be printed, despite the fact that the work often looks handmade.

I mostly print Giclée, because Giclée printing these days is phenomenal in terms of print quality and choice of the paper surface. Sometimes, if an artwork lends itself to a limited number of colours, I screenprint. Screen printing has its own unique character which I don't think even Giclée printing can fully replicate.

I don't have one particular theme when I create images. I like to experiment. I'm influenced by René Gruau, Utagawa Hiroshige, David Hockney, Peter Blake and many, many others.
