About Rosey Prince

  • Biography
My work looks at the idea of place in the urban environment and our relation to it in terms of history and identity.  I spend a lot of time walking around and through London (the city where I live and work), for work, on errands as well as just pleasure and curiosity and am interested in how the city is constantly evolving; familiar buildings and spaces vanish and almost instantly forgotten.  I am interested in the idea of these landmarks – the structures we use to identify the areas we inhabit and how we negotiate our way through them.  A lot of these walks focus on the river and I have recently been travelling further afield through the industrial landscape of the Thames Estuary.

Many of my prints are mezzotints a labour intensive drypoint type  technique where an image is produced by working from dark to light.  I also work on previously etched plates working on them in a similar way to mezzotint, scraping back the plates to produce extraordinary and beautiful textures.  This gives the plates a historical reference so that in a way the process mirrors the subject matter.

In addition to printing I have also recently started painting in oils mostly on canvas paper but also on board which is an exciting development for me both in terms of the painting but also in how approach my printmaking.
