    The Royal Academy of Arts

I was a student at the RA Schools many years ago. I've done a lot of talks and workshops for them over the years. This is about as professorial as I'll ever look. I was running a drawing event for art teachers in the new extension of the RA buildings. I was showing the teachers how they could disrupt their own drawing knowledge and routine (which can sometimes get in the way of doing something new) by adding Pritt to their paper before they begin (!)

    Drawing Workshops

    Drawing Workshops

Over the years I'v spent as much time teaching approaches to drawing to all kinds of students. This one is me running a drawing workshop in a gallery setting. The paintings are mine. The exhibition was called Monarchy in the UK which ran in 2012. I don't really tell people exactly what to do in my teaching - I'm much more likely to set up a problem and then compare the range of solutions that my students come up with. No one artwork has all the answers.

    Hackney Wick

    Hackney Wick

I've been working in the same building since 2000. It's in Hackney Wick very close to Stratford in East London - an area largely unheard of before the 2012 Olympics. The area was full of small scale industry and not much else, a lot of artists found affordable studios here although gentrification has dramatically changed the place. This was a shot taken by the film maker Souleyman Messalti who filmed me talking about myself. The series Portraits of Hackney Wick offers an insight to the range of creative people working there at the time.
