About Nikolaos Giannakakis
Biography
I started painting self-portraits because it gave me an opportunity to expose areas of my life that needed revealing and healing. With time, these self-portraits slowly started to incorporate different elements of everyday life. By forgoing realistic proportions, the focus shifts to expressing varying mental and emotional states of mind. I find challenges and joy in returning to those moments many times, as emotion is fluid, and painting is thus a reflection of the journey.
Art is, for many, a cathartic process: from hope, to revelation, and finally a grand release when a breakthrough is shared with the audience. Therefore, choice to use acrylics throughout my work is a measured one. It conveys the message in layers, textures, growth and mistakes, and all of which is shared with the viewer.
