About Michele Francis

  • Biography
I spent this spring and summer just north of Boston in my studio, which happens to be a wonderfully old barn. I began each day around 7 am, heading to the barn in the same paint-splattered clothes I had worn the day before….and the day before that. My inspired direction did not take shape immediately, I remained in a state of malleable play for weeks and most days returned only to the house for a quick lunch and dinner after dark. It was ultimately emerging from weeks of this routine and certainly, a rich array of sensory experiences in and around the barn, that light and its reflection in color and shape struck a chord and equipped my great desire to pursue a means to softly confine and detach some piece of the fleeting experience, not just visually but in essence too. Sunlight in morning, noon, and evening tread in a procession of shapes and colors across tender green leaves, the softest young yellow and red petals, grass blades, and forgotten windowpanes. Embedded in simple paint, it is an articulation of fleeting light, translucent color, and the role of shadow across the shapes in a day and a place.
