About Michael Woods

  • Biography

Inspiration for my work comes from my interest in indigenous cultures and how their artworks reveal the commonality of people around the world.  I have a particular interest in the trickster myths and the role of the trickster in contemporary society and from this I have developed my own anarchic style using clay sculpture, illustration and printmaking.

My clay sculpture works are unique pieces, handbuilt using traditional coiling techniques, decorated with natural oxides and stains.  My digital arts works, are informed by my training as a graphic designer and illustrator.

For many years I worked in London in the creative industries as a designer and artistic director, managing creative studios.  My work with international lifestyle, retail and leisure brands included interior design, display and promotional schemes. Some years ago I relocated to the pastoral beauty of Suffolk, East Anglia, on the east coast of the UK where I produce work in my design and ceramics studios.  Over the past few years my work has been sold at the Affordable Art Fairs in London and New York, in galleries and to private collectors around the world.
