    Altered State and Undertow

Photographing drawings made during the three lockdowns for entry into open submission exhibitions. This is always a tricky business but particularly here as too much light reflects on the graphite and also flattens the overall image. I want to show the shadows cast by the curling of the paper which makes this more sculptural.

    Lithography

    Lithography

When printing 'Decline and Fall' I used a polyester litho plate. This allowed me to photocopy my preprepared image directly onto the plate. Wiping the plate with a citric acid and gum arabic solution before rolling the ink onto the image built a resist with the acidic solution repelling the oil based ink and preventing it from adhering to the white parts of the plate. The photocopier ink meanwhile attracted the ink to the image. The plate was then put through the press to transfer the image onto Somerset paper.

    Screenprinting

    Screenprinting

In making this screenprinted monotype the image is painted directly onto the screen using watercolour. Screenprinting medium is then pulled through the screen with a squeegee creating a unique print. The image can be repeated for a small series but deteriorates with each print made. I use this process as well as photographic stencils within my work.

    Making an etching plate

    Making an etching plate

Here I am transferring a drawing onto an etching plate in preparation for 'biting' the image with acid. The zinc plate is coated with a soft ground which lifts from the plate when I put pressure on it by drawing through paper with a pencil. Where the ground is removed the plate beneath is exposed to the acid and so the image is etched into the plate when placed in an acid bath.
