About Michael James

  • Biography

Thanks for visiting my profile on Artfinder. I'm a Liverpool  based artist with an interest in graphical images. Working with Linocut printing my aim is to simplify the subject while emphasising the detail and often the sheer scale of the buildings. My subject matter is mostly of our familiar surroundings, functional (Brutalist) architecture and urban landscapes.

The process of the linocut print involves carving out the image onto a sheet of Linoleum. This sheet or plate is then inked up and pressed onto the paper either by hand using a barren or with a printing press. The ink is transferred from the uncut areas of the plate, which can then be re-used to make multiple editions. Multiple plates can be used for the same image, or further carving into an existing plate can be done (known as reduction printing) to add extra colour or depth to an image.

The handmade nature of the process means that no print will be exactly the same, providing unique prints every time.
