Does this count as work ?

We have had the pleasure to visit Monet's famous garden at Giverny, on a quiet, soft, early summer morning. One could call it research for work, but really it was just sheer joy.

    The joy of compost

    The joy of compost

How beautiful the kitchen scraps and the flower cuttings can be - I have taken to studying them and using them as the basis for new works. Then they can be added to the compost heap and eventually they will become the 'black gold' that feeds the flowers I can paint in the summer.

Painting the scent of the flowers

Painting the scent of the flowers

These months of lockdown throughout the world have certainly been times of reflection and contemplation. What really matters ? What brings us joy? My rambling, unkempt French country garden has been a great solace and my renewed connection to it has led directly to the plants and flowers becoming the material for a new body of work in my studio. Exploring the papery petals, the fleshy stems, the way plants can display both strength and fragility, searching to embody my paintings with the heady scent & beauty of blooms.

Using the experience/memory of making work on the beach on the island to feed into some new paintings. Trying to embody the spirit & fragility of the dunes & wild coast into the paintings.

    En plein air

Sometimes I need to breath the sea air and paint directly, soaking up the atmosphere, luckily the beautiful French Atlantic island of L'Ile d'Oleron is just a few hours away
