About Leah Maximova

  • Biography
Ever since I was a child I have had a distinctive urge for recapturing the experience of what I have seen. Be that  a little pattern on a rug in my room or a beauty of butterfly wings.
When I was eighteen I entered an University to study Fine Art. Those ardent days were filled with learning something interesting and new almost every day. I started painting myself and people around me, few people commissioned their portraits to me at that time. I experimented with different mediums, techniques and genres. Following successful completion of my undergraduate course I was able to access an MA program with an opportunity to consolidate and refine my art by developing my studio practice to a professional level.
A new wave of inspiration has visited me when I first came to the UK. Strangely enough, the emotional experiences of what I have seen here in England evoked memories of my childhood.  It was a truly childlike excitement at seeing diversity of people with their unique cultures and individual identities. Observing the life of London and its limitless spectrum of light and colour, in which people, landscapes and objects get all mixed together, was like a breath of fresh air to me.
While I use a variety of materials and techniques I tend to focus on the correct handling  of colours and how they relate to each other in the context of composition. I often use diverse set of colours consciously to instil a feeling of energy and vibrancy in my paintings. My ultimate aim as an artist is to transform my  somewhat emotionally charged observations  and impressions into something evocative and memorable without being too literal-minded.
