    Works on paper...adding color

This is where I have a lot of fun with the colors. I start with the watercolors and later in most of these paintings I add pastel. I like creating layers and depth by using multi media techniques.

    Working on mixed media

    Working on mixed media

I do mixed media, a combination of watercolors, ink, pastel and colored pencil, on heavy watercolor paper. This is the pen and ink stage. Also, a time of real focus as one mistake can end a painting.

    Getting Started

    Getting Started

When I start a large oil, I always have a large drawing before anything else.

    Stages

    Stages

There are several stages before I get to a final product mixed media on paper. The first one is starting a drawing in colored pencil on 140lb. paper.

    Framed mixed media on paper

    Framed mixed media on paper

This is an example of one of the ways I have framed the watercolor and ink and the mixed media paintings that are on 140lb. paper. Even though they have been protected with UV coatings, I recommend putting them under glass or plexiglass. I like to use white or off white mats in black frames.

    The Underpainting

    The Underpainting

When I do oils I do a texture and acrylic underpainting before I even start the oils. Then I finish the rest of the painting in oil transparencies. I can really start to feel the direction the painting is going at this point. It's always amazing to me how the oils change the entire look.

    Start Point

    Start Point

Sometimes I wish I could just start to paint and go for it. I love the beautiful abstract work I see but seem unable to go there myself. Instead I seem to be going more and more the other direction. So for me there is a lot of linework and shading involved. Whether the painting is a large oil, or mixed media on paper, it starts out with a detailed drawing.

    Final touches

    Final touches

Sometimes the little final touches seem to take the most time. If something just doesn't seem quite right, I have to keep adjusting until it does.

    Where I Work

    Where I Work

My studio space is relatively small, but really works well. When we moved from a larger home to a townhouse, I was concerned if it would work as nicely as what I had before. But a little good planning, shelves up high (thanks to my husband), and a storage closet do the trick.

    Hanging View of Wind Spirit

Most of my oil paintings are large, with gallery wrapped edges. The edges are most often black.

    WHOA- DETAILS AND MORE DETAILS

Sometimes my eyes wish I was a little less into the detail and linework- but it's what I do, so I hope they hang in there awhile.
