  • Biography
more info, design work and archive on my site.
Influences from knee high to now…drawing, parsley the lion, mr benn, lego, japanese toys, the banana splits, the arabian nights, nature, sesame street, sitting bull, skateboarding, bongos, the unexplained magazine, album covers, 60's and 70's culture, the muppett show, king sounds drum room, monkey, rodigan’s roots rockers, painting, wood carving, sumo on 4, mountain bikes, African art, shorinji, kahlil gibran, Japanese design, printing, the funki dreds, matisse, picasso, textile design, photography, native tongues, sculpture, calder, kurosawa, peterson’s worldwide, straight no chaser, typography,
batucada, maracatu, snorkling, spiritual jazz, the east, west, north and south…

Jules left school at 15 not particularly keen to go to college, he’d had enough of the institution thing to be honest…he was all creative, dyslexic and not too academic – all about the art class, technical drawing and creative writing. So Jules found himself at 21 working as an antique upholsterer which he felt was a pretty cool job and satisfied a working-with-your-hands, craft kind of leaning, and gave him a little time in the workshop for a bit of wood carving too. He’d always loved drawing at home from small: cat footballers, musicians and graphic drawings that were purely line, shape and colour, so he decided to sign-up to a couple of part-time college classes (figure and portrait sculpture and general drawing and painting) to satisfy the creative side. He immediately loved the two days of art school but not so much the three days of upholstery. The only thing to do, enrole for a two year foundation course in art and design. Jules loved it to the fullest, with great projects and excellent tutors he was free to experiment with painting, photography, sculpture, 3D design, graphics and printing (etching, wood-block and his favourite, silk-screen), Jules achieved a distinction.
Roll on a few years and Jules established Beatbug art and design in the summer of 2000 (at London's Spitalfields market) after graduating with a degree in fine art sculpture, a pool trophy and an ever-expanding record collection from djing. He had also returned to silk-screen printing, a medium that was one of his specialities on the two year foundation. His graphic approach to printing together with his drawing style led naturally to graphic design and illustration through a number of commissions, now regular parts of Jules's business along side the screen prints.

Our new prints look even better in the flesh than online. The two new ones have now joined our original three and we risk looking like a Beatbug gallery. We now have one that looks like each member of the family: The first picture we got is a girl with headphones in a deckchair – that’s my wife. I’m 'Bobo Style' and our little boy is 'Chill Bill'...the kids were getting old enough to realise one of them didn’t have an equivalent so we let our daughter choose one, and she went for 'Starbelly'. We’re hoping the cats don’t notice next...I couldn’t resist buying the gorgeous 'She' as well, the downside is that we now have to have another child to match. Please stop selling art ;)...thanks, and great work!
    Jamey (Bromley, UK)
