About Jacqui Harris

  • Biography
I had always wanted to be an artist, but when I was young I was advised to get a "proper" job. Consequently I became a nurse. Whilst working as a nurse I made murals for a ward, posters for clinics - anything that would allow me to do a little art on the job. Colleagues could see my yearning and asked me why I wasn't working as an artist but it wasn't until I injured my back that I felt able to choose the path that I had always desired and completed a degree in Fine Art which led to me becoming a full time artist. I currently find that working in an abstract way allows my vision to be clearest in the things I want to say concerning colour and surface. I am particularly inspired by all the points where the man- made and nature meet, like a rusty old barn in the middle of a field, or the colliding of the inner outer worlds at the point of the window. I am particular lit up when I see any meeting point of God and man.
My paintings are very textured, often including collage and made using cold wax mixed with oil paint. This gives beautiful transluscency and allows for a build up of layers. I love to excavate into layers as well as building up the surface.
