    Art in Space

In 1988 Minekov's work was chosen as a symbol of the second allied space journey of Bulgaria and Russia. His artwork, comprised of 2 half spheres forming the planet Earth, was flown into space during the mission. The 2 half spheres are kept together by a fitted stand, and open up to reveal a relief of the Shipka memorial in Bulgaria, composed between stylised earth layers. During the flight, the lack of gravity separated the spheres, which floated free from each other in the spaceship. The work which was launched into space was created of special lightweight metals. This is a bronze cast, currently in the collection of the Bulgarian Space Research Institute in Sofia.
