    Out in the Open!

On the summit of Brockagh Mountain, Co. Wicklow. I spend a lot of time out in the open enjoying being surrounded by such amazing landscape. I draw so much inspiration from these places. Nature is so important to me and being out in it makes me feel so grounded and the drawings I take back to the studio feed my work as it progress. To be part of the landscape..

Plein air drawing, Charcoal and pencil on Cotton Rag paper

Here is one of many drawings I do in preparation for a new work. I take my sketchbook or sheets of cotton rag paper out into the landscape and study what I see. Breaking down the detail and working in an abstracted expressionistic way helps me relate to my surroundings more and I try to push this on the canvas later in the studio.

    Places I Go

Here is an example of the atmosphere and environment of where I love to spend a lot of my time. I consider this also to be past of 'me at work'. These places in nature fuel my art when I get back to the studio. I think a short video, even just from my phone captures an idea of the experience. The sounds, movements and visual all help, I am only missing the sharp sweet scent of the pine trees, grass, soil and many other scents which can only be appreciated when your sitting surrounded by it physically. Our world is a truly beautiful place.
