Derek’s driving motto: “Capturing the untouched beauty of nature so we may appreciate and enjoy it forever.” In the hands of this artist, landscape and nature become extra-ordinary with rich texture and color. He incorporates bright colors found in nature and mixes them to create abstracts with open spaces representing the freedom as one discovers the beauty in our natural surroundings.

Derek photographs forests and surroundings, thus he records a wooden reality in impressive photos. Via his special way of seeing and observing, he lends a fresh evocative power to a reality that is already familiar to us.

New truths join together with old and known ones. Derek in his paintings zeros in on the realities of nature. Beautiful abstracts are created using the shapes and colors taken from enlarged photographs.

Free as a Bird is Derek's feelings when he spent time in his favorite cottage in Muskoka. As Derek's many other paintings, he chose lively colors to express his love for nature. "It's easy to tell this is a forest when I paint scenery, but you feel different ways when you look at an abstract artwork so I want to make sure that whoever looks at my paintings will also feel the joy that I felt. I want to bring positive energy to everyone through my artwork."
