About Alex Ocampo

  • Biography
My aim in art is to continue the great spanish tradition of figurative painting that started with Velazquez, went on with Sorolla and has now the likes of Antonio Lopez and Golucho as representatives. Other sources of inspiration have been painters like Chardin, Serebriakova, the Russian romantics, J.S. Sargent, A. Munnings, etc.
There is an undefinable, unreachable beauty in the world that I strive to picture. Even in tragedy. I fail most of the time, of course, but success is reached over heaps of failures.
I paint in the age-tested medium of oil paint on canvas and board. I also love drawing with graphite, charcoal and inks.
I have also worked as a photographer, my last show was in 2003 at the English Cultural Centre of B.A. and it was a documentation of the grafiti and images the inmates of a BA prison left on their cell walls.
I also teach drawing and painting at my studio in Palermo, B.A.
