About Mark Hannah

  • Biography
Located in the Mojave desert I am inspired by the color and spatial distortions of vintage photography and also the effects of light in impressionistic landscapes to depict the open spaces and unique flora of the desert environment. I also strive to incorporate wherever I can reused and recycled material in my work.

Event: Art/Act: Local – Natural Harmony

    Dates: 2 Mar 2018 - 29 May 2018

Venue: David Brower Center, 2150 Allston Way, Suite 100 Berkeley, CA 94704

Today the environmental movement goes by many names: sustainability, biodiversity, restoration, wilderness, renewables, photovoltaics – among others. All of these are important on their own but also can be distilled into one essential theme: beauty. There is an inherent beauty in environmental justice.

Many artists, environmentalists, and activists have recognized the importance of beauty. “A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise,” wrote Aldo Leopold. The late Doug Tompkins believed, “If anything can save the world I’d put my money on beauty.” How do we see beauty, not just in untouched landscapes but manifested in our everyday lives? For Bay Area artists, Natural Harmony is both a celebration and an investigation of beauty.

Event: EMPTY PLACES : ABANDONED SPACES

    Dates: 23 Feb 2018 - 17 Mar 2018

Venue: Praxis Gallery, 2600 East 26th Street Minneapolis, MN

Through the visual representation of abandoned spaces, artifacts of history are at once fresh and new, ancient and decayed. The past continues to live in these forsaken, ruined, or empty spaces and we ask — Who were the people who lived and worked here? What were their lives like? What were their stories? What happened to them in these spaces?

Praxis Gallery presents an international collection of photographic art that explores the visual and social significance of abandoned space - where derelict factories, churches, private houses or other empty places serve as the basis for creative investigation.
