About John McManus

  • Biography
My passion for photography began when my parents purchased a 35mm camera for my high school graduation. I then worked a summer job to save money for some inexpensive darkroom equipment and started developing my own work. That was the beginning of my lifetime love for photography. I began developing my creative side by shooting everyday landscapes and streetscapes in urban Brooklyn and Long Island, NY. After my 2nd year of college in1979, I was lucky enough to have my hobby morph into my full-time employment when a local editor from “Look” magazine took notice of my work after a chance encounter at a family dinner. After several years of apprenticeship in my early twenties, I formed John McManus Photography to focus primarily on architectural/interior photography. For the past 40 years, I have thrived in both New York and the Savannah/Hilton head area as an assignment photographer working with architects, builders, designers, magazines, and resorts. Throughout the rigors of my many years of architectural photography work, I found solace and refuge in the flowing landscapes of coastal Georgia and South Carolina. My collection of landscapes and seascapes of the Low Country offers a glimpse at my peaceful commune with nature through my camera. My travels have brought me to Ecuador where I’ve discovered my passion for “streetscapes, abstracts, the highlands and its people. I try to find and photograph the less obvious in the hopes for others to see and experience what I feel and see throughout my photographic journey.
