The landscape is an expressionistic representation of one of the Podil streets, the historic district in Kyiv, painted en plein air on a March day. It’s an attempt to capture the essence of the place, conveying the weight of the overcast sky, the subtle variations in the weathered facades, and the sense of depth as the street recedes into the distance.
The brushwork is bold and expressive, a testament to the immediacy of the moment. The buildings, rendered in a palette of muted greys, creams, and browns, appear almost to dissolve into the atmosphere. The sky, a swirling mass of grey and blue, presses down on the street, enveloping it in a soft, diffused light.
