This is a modern take off of Velasquez's incredible portrait of Pope Innocent X. The very same image that haunted Francis Bacon to the point where he got so frustrated with it after dozens of attempts to capture the raw power that he began the screaming Pope Series. It was Francis, like myself, that was screaming. I was as faithful to the original as possible, but, at the same time, let my flair and natural lines and brushwork come into play. Then, I painted over it and this appeared. Perfect for those that do not mind confronting this gaze.
