This "writing lesson" is one of the artist's oldest childhood memories.
Six years old, the school and the first pages of writing.
The mistress, an old woman, not at all affectionate, very strict, had whole pages of A written, whole pages of B and so on with all the letters. It was very difficult at age six, and by the mid-twentieth century students were writing with a quill and an inkwell.
Nibs were often blunt and ink ran everywhere except where it should.
Of course, the professor was furious, and we had to start the endless page again.
This period does not represent a real good memory.
The artist, dreamy and undisciplined, resented these interminable rehearsals under constraint.
It was only later that he understood and appreciated writing and reading, which allow him to apprehend the world with great freedom.
