Thoughtful people riding their eccentric creatures as if they were commonplace. Small sculptures questioning what we see as normal.
The Round Creatures that these women are sitting on are actually flat, rather than spherical, and both seem quite happy with their unusual arrangement. The creatures have very long tails with which to balance themselves. The first rider is perched sideways on the ridge of her creature’s top-line, and she is looking backwards towards the second pair, who are just arriving. Sometimes it can seem necessary to wait for another part of the self to catch up in order to be able to proceed together as a whole.
I made these sculptures by modelling with wax onto a wire armature, or framework, and then I moulded them and cast them using an innovative technique that I originated. The finished sculpture is made of a vibrant contemporary British eco-resin that allows me to reproduce the beautiful translucent cream colour of the original wax into a durable material, and which creates interesting glimpses through to the armature, or internal structure of the sculpture. You can see pictures of my casting process in the “Me at Work” section of my Profile.
The sculptures are mounted on individual semi-translucent, almost black, flat acrylic bases, and together measure 50cm long by 14cm tall and 5.5cm wide, including the bases. They are each initialled near the tail on the creature’s right side, and come with a signed letter of authentication, stating the edition number. They are cast as a limited edition of 24, and are available either together as a pair or individually. See my further listings to purchase them separately.
Although these sculptures look delicate they are actually much more robust than they appear and they can withstand small knocks and movements in the home. Being made in a light-weight material, they weigh less than half a kilo each, and are easy to transport and move about. I package them in a sturdy cardboard box and they travel very well by courier.
These little sculptures draw us into their world as we imagine that we are also in their reality.
