Begum Akhtar songs appear frequently in my Spotify playlist which is always on while I paint - An accomplished actress, singer and one of the last courtesans, she brought an intensity, pathos and a virtuosity to her rendition of semi classical Indian compositions which has an other-worldly quality. This portrait probably a still from one of movie roles is from the prime of her youth in the 1930's. My art is a reflection of all things going on around me. I internalize my environment and the critical elements show up in my work. These include abstracts, figurative compositions and realism.
