Had the artist intended to paint a snowy landscape, he could have left the canvas mostly white. Instead, he put a lot of details into it. In contrast to the soft blanket of snow in the upper right, he added many sharply defined brushstrokes in Prussian blue to the rest of the painting, and framed it left and right with dark bold patches. Three or four small red sparks accent the work in just the right places, and burnt sienna gives the piece its grounding. On closer inspection, numerous other colours can be discovered, which proves that winter is not dreary at all.
