The strong contrast of the silver poplars against their surroundings drew me in one winter afternoon, and though a bit cold I had to paint this scene.
"Winter Whites" is 24”H x 18”W on a 1.5” deep cradled birch panel painted in oil using palette knives. My knives and silicon tools (similar to spatulas) allow me to make bold marks and visible texture. I use these rather than brushes almost exclusively when painting on location. Some of the natural wood of the panel is exposed in areas where I purposely did not paint. I liked the idea of incorporating the grain of the wood panel into the composition, giving it a very organic feel. The panel was first sealed with clear gesso before painting; after completion it has been protected with a thin coat of cold wax medium.
Wired and ready to hang, this painting may be framed but does not require one to enjoy.
