This is an 11 colour reduction linocut of an immature female Snowy Owl.
Mature females have less black plumage and the adult males are almost pure white. A large majestic owl with piercing yellow eyes. They come south from the Arctic to hunt in some years, linked to the availability of their primary food supply, lemmings. They are spectacular to see and luckily for us, they are daytime hunters. For this print, I based my initial drawing on a photo by Sally Hansen (with her permission).
The background is a semi-abstract portrayal intended to keep the viewer focussed on the owl, but it is typical of the tree lines and barns in the area.
