Winter can be a magical time of year, if you actually have a winter season. It is cold, barren, bleak, but with slight turn in perspective, it can be calm, serene, placid, and other-worldly.
This painting is of my son Lawson, outside my studio. The window boxes are still green, yet it is about to snow. He is impatient, wants to build snowmen and throw snowballs...but he has to wait. I like to call this the "calm before the storm". When you are kid, all the possibilities of a snowstorm, the fun, the activity, the suspending of daily toil and responsibility for a slice of time dedicated to play, cozying up by the fire, drinking hot cocoa, and feeling the warms on a dark cold day.
I loved this as a child, and I love it even more as a parent.
