Original artwork description:

This drawing focused on value range control working in both black and white charcoal on medium gray toned paper. The difficulties of working with black and white charcoal come when the two values are close to each other on the paper. You do not mix them, as the tone will become an unsightly bluish gray. The Toned paper provides the middle value and the artist works in both directions using black charcoal to produce the darks and white charcoal to produce the lights.
