A lot of my fantasy paintings start out as portrait studies, I may see a face or a particular expression on a person's features which triggers something in my imagination. The portrait I began with for this painting conjured for me an idea of a blossoming young spirit, both wild and innocent simultaneously. I painted a springtime meadow as a metaphor for this idea and a meandering river to symbolize the figure's journey towards self realization.
