Sunbeams dancing in meadows, dappled light playing peek-a-boo in aspens-- a few things I love about painting en plein air. Wild Lavender Meadows is inspired by Idaho's Albion Mountains and meadows of southern Idaho.
Palette knife work (my favorite kind of work!) went into the foreground trees and grasses, giving way to fabulous textures that I wanted to contrast with softness and serenity in the distant meadow, mountains, and sky. Background softness lent itself well to brush technique.
It's a pleasure making paintings about natural sunlight, how it plays off elements in a landscape, while also giving the paint a voice to sing loudly or softly, depending on its part in the visual song.
