I like the whole idea of Wigan Pier. A place that exists as much in the imagination as it does in reality. I remember folks saying when asked "where are you going for your holidays this year ? "I'm going to Wigan Pier." i.e. they couldn't afford a holiday. It seems the right time to resurrect this metaphor for poverty and the oppressive state in this new Orwellian era.
