A still life with gladioli in a green glass decanter, set against my black-and-white painting of a spreading plane tree. Around them are glimpses of the studio – a lamp with a round paper shade, an open art album, anatomical sketches, and a cardboard tablet leaning against the canvas. The gladioli seem to dissolve into the background, the last autumn flowers fading faster than I can capture them. Their delicate beauty exposes the structure beneath, as if nature’s skeleton is laid bare. Winter quietly begins.
This oil painting is on stretched canvas 100x80cm (3 x31,5in), varnished, with the sides fully painted so it looks complete without a frame. A hanging system is attached to the back, ready to hang on a nail.
